At your Best
A presentation at the life empowerment fair organised by DOUBLE HEDGE Africa on the 4th and 5th December 2009 at Village Square 68B Agbani Road, Enugu, Nigeria
Introduction
Have you ever been in a situation where you begin to ask yourself different questions that you cannot figure out the answer within yourself? I have, but the truth is that, we can be inspired under all circumstances, it is up to you.
One of the greatest truths about life is that it never gets easy but most people are not honest enough to be humble. As for me, the challenge to become better and better drives me.
Over the years, many people have focused so much on being the best of what they are, creating real success and achieving their heart desires. Let’s face it; no one wants to be unsuccessful. We all want to achieve our dreams, but for some that just don’t happen.
As you probably already know, it is not how skillful you are that decides success; someone without any skill shouldn’t even be trying to develop a professional career. However, many do have all the skills and are still not successful, sometimes more is required.
So what are the differences between a successful and unsuccessful person?
If you look at much of what is written, and listen to professionals talk about success, there is usually a common theme, one person’s experience and strategies and principles of becoming and being successful is replicated by other person and that becomes like the “formula for success” otherwise why else do we turn up at various workshops and seminars conducted by successful people.
But there are a lot of myths and misconceptions floating around in the world on how to build a successful career. These are also as a result of the same process, so wouldn’t it be great if we could sort out the myths from the reality?
That would be really useful, wouldn’t it? There’s really only one way to do that and that’s to conduct a real world research into what drives success.
How would this research be done you might ask? Success is very individual, for some people, it is having the freedom to do what ever they like and for others is being able to fulfil their life’s destiny. For you it might be something else.
With every passing year you will need to let down your guard and become your own guard and Jump into the water of success.
Success is related to Time
There is no short cut to success; I wish I could buy back the days and time that others have wasted. It sounds so impossible and depressing that sometimes you could wonder whether you should even bother trying! But it is just one side of the coin, and doesn’t mean success is unattainable. Success is quite obviously attainable as there are successful people. But it is related to time.
Time has an effect in whatever we do; it shows itself most obviously in our learning. Once we have learned something we can build on that in ways that were not previously possible. But we have to start with that initial learning.
Most people have heard about the vicious circle. Here, negative momentum is the driving force. The poor gets poorer, have more children, lose their jobs, and can’t even get a job and so on. It seems to be a never ending downward spiral. Only a few escape!
But on the other hand, there is a matching upward spiral too. This is when things start in a small and insignificant way and gradually build up and increase in momentum as they link with an increasing number of ideas.
It is more important to be ever more successful than to achieve success. Even with small steps, the former attitude will lead to the latter attainment.
Upward spiral can be powerful. They seem to fuel themselves and become self propelling in time. Successful people get more opportunities to be even more successful. Those who need opportunity never seem to get one! Many people think this is luck, either good or bad depending on its nature. But this isn’t luck. We make our own luck.
Good ideas can come from anywhere. It is up to us to notice and be open to them to our advantage.
Today, you have made the very good first step by attending this event; think about many others who are sitting down somewhere watching movies. However, the biggest question is, what are you going to do about what you’ve heard today?
What do you need to do?
1. Have an idea- ideas rule the world
2. Be passionate about it – earn a living from doing what you love
3. Decide that it is what you really want- be original
4. Be determined – champions don’t quit
5. Be focused- don’t be deceived easily
6. Let your instinct guide you- listen to yourself
7. Prove your worth – don’t leave things undone
8. Give it your best- people want to see your best not your cheapest
9. Hang on even at the 11th hour- don’t give
10. be honest- don’t step on any one’s toes, it will backfire.
The best things of life are freely given, the air, water, in as much as you want to be successful, you don’t have to be selfish and caged up within yourself. How about developing the networking mindset, maybe you have that one million dollar idea, well done! But it now depends on how you want to explore all the possibilities.
Have you ever thought about having a mentor, maybe you have a friend who is doing very well in certain areas of life, have a word with him and tell him about your interest in having him/her as your mentor, he/she might feel flattered but there is every possibility that he would want to prove himself as a great mentor to you and he will help you.
Start today to discover why you are placed on this Earth and pursue it with diligence and perseverance and success will with you.
See you at the top.
