Oh LORD, Please, Break My Heart and Spirit
“What you feel matters only to you, but what you do to those you love is what matters most” Baruch Okpulor, Author of Gateways to Addiction
Imagine asking someone to break your heart in a world where every one dread being heart broken. In our world, thousands of men and women have had their heart broken at one time or the other over one heart desire or another, one plan or the other, one relationship or the other.
The promise of marriage has given birth to the highest number of heart breaks than any other.
Several ladies are heart broken because the men who promised to marry them declined. Most women suffered emotional pain for years as a result of this disappointment. They spend night upon night crying over the loss.
Some men have also experienced same in the hand of women.
Most husbands continually break the heart of the wives when they make them “punch bags”, or abuse them verbally, engage in extramarital affairs, fill their lives with drunkenness, keep late nights, have no time for them and kids, as well as God. When all they know is money, wealth, work and vacation.
Similarly, some women break the heart of their husbands with their constant nagging and quarrelsome attitude, lack of interest in the things of God, when they have no time for their husbands, the kids, but always on one business trip or another. This is the time when the house is run by the maidservant-cooks the meals, washes the clothes, cleans the house and cares for the kids.
But is this what it means to be heart broken by God? Absolutely not.
A time of being heart broken is a time of sober reflection. It is a time you are calm and reasonable enough to review your past and present way of life. It is a time you are ready and willing to search your conscience for your mistakes.
You hear yourself ask “where have I gone wrong to deserve this treatment?” “Is there anything I should have done in this relationship that I did not do?” “Was I too rash in the discussions I took?” “Is there any time I was selfish, always seeking my own, not willing to give my time, money and effort?” “What did I do that push this person to act this way?” “Did he/she discover any abominable things about my past?” “God, how do I survive this?”
The business man would ask “what on earth made him/her decline from a plan we have concluded?” “How could he make away with the money?” “What has come over me?” “Why did I take such an action?” “Oh my God, I’m finished!”
The student who heart is broken because of failure in academic plans is sober enough to search his heart to ask where he has gone wrong. “Does it mean I didn’t well enough for this exam?” “Is there any mistake I made on any of the answers I gave?” “Did I miss any assignment, group work or tutorial that caused me this loss?” “What actually went wrong?” “That means I have to repeat this exam or class” “Where do I get the money and time for all this again?” “God, this is painful”
These are several unanswered questions that rave the head when heart is broken. You may never have created the time or be sober and sincere enough to evaluate your relationship with your fiancée, fiancé, family, husband, wife, business partner, or God until a time like this.
Fortunately, at a time when things go wrong, most of us start seeking God’s presence for help and consolation.
Also, you notice that you must have a strong heart to break the heart of another. You would not be strong enough to do it if you are a weakling at heart.
Why Your Heart must be Broken
“When your heart become broken by God, holiness, honour, greatness, wealth, divine power and authority flow naturally into your life” Baruch Okpulor
It is very interesting to know that we cannot serve God rightly until our hearts are broken. This is the secret which may be a puzzle to you.
We would not be ready to yield to God’s Will absolutely when we have a stubborn heart. That heart must be converted from natural to supernatural.
We might not seek God’s help and restorations except our hearts are broken. We would still be proud at heart, always believing that we must do it our own way, with our own strength and wisdom. Until then, we may not ask “what is it that I have done wrong that God’s mercies and blessings keep avoiding me?” ”What is it that I must do to attract God and His blessings into my life again?”
Now consider this passage.
“The LORD is nigh to them that are of a broken heart and saves such as be of a contrite spirit” Psalms 34:18
This is the secret of the ages. The one discovered by King David about his love life with God. While the men and women of this world avoid heart break at all cost, David asks God to break his own heart. What a crazy idea!
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken heart and a contrite heart, O God you will not despise” Psalms 51:17
God will not ignore a broken heart and a humble spirit. He is attracted to them. The type of heart that is willing and ready to do everything to know God, do His Will, come into His presence daily and keep a personal relationship with Him. God sees such a heart as a sacrifice that cannot be corrupt.
Most people would do anything to keep their relationship with their loved ones. They are committed to please their husbands, wives, family, and grow the home. They endure inconveniencies because they have a focus and a target which is to build a loving relationship and responsible home.
You engage in all sorts of sins and spiritual crimes because your heart is not yet broken. You are under the bondage of premarital and extramarital affairs, keep malice, gossip, live in unforgiveness, bitterness, become stingy toward men and God, proud, boastful, hot-tempered, heartless, because your heart is still raw and natural.
You are not heart broken because you are still stubborn to God and His Will concerning your life. You love watching the TV and movies, spend more time before your dressing mirror than you spend before God’s presence because your heart is still attracted to pleasure and passions of this world.
You find it difficult to study and meditate on the Word of God, hates fasting and prayers because your heart is still in the world.
Those whose hearts have been broken over a relationship discovered that they were not really in control of such relationships as they thought they were.
Do you think you are in control of your relationship with sin and the world to the detriment of your soul?
Have you ever considered the fact that you are just a tiny piece of beautiful dust which could vanish in a twinkling of an eye? Have you considered who is in control of the life you sing its praises daily?
